Why FACS

Why FACS Loves You!

FACS loves you was created to inspire and cultivate a new era of teaching for the Family and Consumer Science world.  Family and Consumer Science was founded as Home Economics, it is the comprehensive body of skills, research, and knowledge that helps students make informed decisions about their well being, relationships, and resources to achieve optimal quality of life.  FACS is important in all aspects of life and provides students with the tools and knowledge to be successful in many fields such as, human development, personal and family finance, housing and interior design, food science, nutrition and wellness, apparel and hospitality and tourism.  By providing these classes within our education system we are giving students the ability to explore fields in the human service industry and create hands on learning experiences for them to discover their passion for building relationships, helping the community and fostering a love for the FACS world!

FACS Loves You!

I choose FACS because I feel that it is one of the most important jobs in the world to teach our youth about the importance of family planning, financial stability, cooking and child care.  Creating an understanding of family dynamics and human growth will continue to be an asset as they grow into adulthood.

My Story

A tale about what led me to teaching FACS.

My name is Morgan Groff and as a little girl I dreamed of becoming a teacher!  I remember sitting in my Father’s classroom as he taught American History with such passion and dedication, thinking how much I admired him for choosing a career that made an impact, a career that he loved!  As I grew, I was dedicated to my FCCLA chapter as well as Ready, Set Teach, one of the few FACS classes offered at  Bandera High School.  As graduation approached I was unsure of what direction to go in life, for my passion for teaching had shifted as I gained new interests.

I started college and throughout the years jumped from one major to another, finally deciding on Family and Consumer Science when I moved to Waco, Texas to finish my Bachelors degree through Tarleton State University.  While in Waco, I managed an afterschool program that became a driving force in my life.  Alongside my colleagues I was able to help in creating curriculum, implementing community outreach projects and directing everyday performance on site.  In 2015, I moved back to my home roots with the full intention to start up my very own after-school business but, life has a funny way of shifting in directions that you least expect!

In a blink of an eye my life took a turn in a whole different direction, I was at an all time low going through a very difficult transition and my plans being put on hold.  I had to act fast, so I turned to teaching (I know that teaching should not be scape route- but for me it was my saving grace). Little did I know what God had in store for me when I set out to get my alternative teaching certificate.

As ACT (Alternative Certification for Teachers in San Antonio) reviewed my transcript I was told that I should get my certification in FACS- that meant I would be teaching Middle School or High School, grades I never imagined teaching in my 5’3″ petite frame of mind.  I contemplated this decision with much dilemma until, I received a call  about a job opening in the FACS department at my alma mater.  I interviewed for a position at Bandera High School and was remarkably offered the job as the Culinary Arts Teacher and Cheer Sponsor, little did I know I was about to embark on a journey of discovery!

My first year teaching was the most difficult, rewarding and inspirational year of my life.  I was immersed into a world that I knew little to nothing about, my days were filled with cookie dough, laundry, lesson planning, hair bows, glitter, laughter and tears (lots of tears!)  I became so engrossed in my job, that it became my saving grace to the heartache of so much that I had lost!  I am grateful to the administration and Bandera ISD for providing me with my first teaching position, for entrusting me with many hats and responsibilities and for believing in my abilities to TEACH!  I have found my passion for FACS at Bandera, perhaps where I left it ten years ago when I graduated.

I believe in the importance of FACS and what it has to offer to students and the community at large.  I believe that I am able to provide the students that enter my classroom with skills and knowledge that will guide them in life, and help them foster relationships with family, friends and within the workforce.  I believe that love is the foundation of every successful classroom and I make sure that every child that enters my room knows that they are loved!
